I’m a complete book addict and a self-confessed foodie—for me the two come hand in hand. Snacks are, to be perfectly honest, one of my favourite things in life. My idea of a perfect afternoon involves some time in the kitchen, a lot of eating and a book to devour (not literally, I save that for the raw chocolate!)
My favourite snacks are definitely those I can eat whilst I’m busy absorbed in a world, or typing away at my laptop and that requires three things:
No one wants remains of food on their books and once I’m engrossed in a world, I’m not getting up to wipe off crumbs. Na-a, no way my friend.
2. Able to be eaten with one hand
Able to be eaten with one hand. If I have to use two hands to eat it or hold a bowl then it just ain’t gonna happen—that would require having to stop typing or close my book and that completely defeats the object. Nothing interrupts my reading or writing (except maybe food… now I’m just contradicting myself…) so it better be easy to consume. I may sometimes post recipes that DO require a bowl, like healthy ice cream, but I think ice cream is an exception to any rule right?
3. Delicious and nutritious.
I love looking forward to getting comfy and reading or writing, but what tops it all off is knowing I’ve got a yummy but healthy snack to consume whilst reading (though the food normally lasts no longer than 2 minutes, but by then I’m too stuck into what I’m doing to notice!) so that it is pleasurable but completely guilt free.
So, what does that rule out? Basically anything crumbly and anything that could leave a whole lot of mess on the page I’m reading.
At this point you might be thinking, “Jess, what DOES make the right snack then?” and I’m glad you asked. Any kind of bar (preferably one made from dates and nuts because these babies are brilliant for not making a mess), raw chocolate (yes, chocolate is 100% suitable here) and most definitely smoothies.
As the seasons change, so do the kind of snacks I want to indulge in (and snacks are definitely to be indulged!) Generally during the summer months I’m lounging in the sun reading or writing, so I’ll go for smoothies or homemade ice lollies to keep me cool. In the winter you’ll find me snuggled up by the fire (normally with a cat or two by my side) with a mug of steaming herbal tea and some kind of homemade oat biscuit.
